Hi Guys.....Im back!

Options
hello all!

I havent posted in ages. There has been loads going on in my life in the last month.

To cut a (very) long story short......the kids were awash with chicken pox so i couldnt go anywhere for about three weeks, causing spending that i didnt want to have to do via internet supermarkets etc, it meant that i couldnt get out and do what i usually do which is use many different shops for the best prices. I have paid nothing off my debt in the last month and saved nothing either.

The second event which has changed things here is my eldest boy was excluded from school for 3 days, he went back on a monday and was going to be excluded again after being back 2 days, so his father and i took the decision to remove him from school permanently, we think he has adhd or something similar so he is now being home educated.

so........

starting the 5th June which is the beginning of my "month" i will be trying my hardest to get things back to the way before....wish me luck guys..im gonna need it!

JD xx

  • Hey JD,

I'd been wondering where you were! Good luck with getting back on track.

Best of luck too with home educating your son - there seem to be a few people on O/S Board who home educate - maybe you could chat to them?

Hope the pox is all gone!

    HI!

Sorry to hear you've had such a terrible month.

What have the school said about your son? Perhaps you can push more for testing etc (not so that you can label him, just so then you might be able to get grants/places on particular course/schemes become available even if home educated?). Sorry if you've been there done that. I just know that in our school, things become available that wouldn't be if someone hadn't been correctly identified (for want of a better term) especially when they are in yr9,10 & 11 for college courses/apprentice type things.

    Good luck with this month.

thanks for your replies guys. my son is 10 and in yr5. he seems to not be able to fit into the school "way" ie sitting still on a chair for an hour at a time. in fact the teachers have said (only very recently, and when asked directly) that he hasnt really learnt anything in the last 6 months. he is failing in school and this is of great concern to me. and he seems so unhappy and frustrated.

and yes scottish, the pox has left the building! the doctor said my ds3 was the worst case he had seen in 30 years of being a doctor!, he was very ill with it, and being autistic, i couldnt explain to him what was happening. he spent loads of time just staring in the mirror screaming at his face (i felt really helpless). thank goodness its all gone now!

Welcome back, glad the children are better. Make sure your son is assesed properly as some education authorities can drag on for years doing bot all. Hugs.

Hi JD ! sounds like you have had a really tough month! I hope things pick up for you now. If your son is ADHD you may be able to claim DLA for him, although I expect you already know this if you have a son with autism.
Thanks for putting us in the picture and I hope you get things sorted for your son soon!

thanks taplady! we have an appointment at the doctors on the 6th to ask for a referral to child development centre. we shall see how that goes. having been down this road once already i think i will find it a little easier this time.

Sorry to hear of your difficult time. You've certainly got your work cut out for you with one autistic son and one undiagnosed ADHD.

My recommendations would be to go down the statementing route and get a referral to an educational psychologist as soon as possible so that you can plan some learning strategies for him and get him on track (albeit at a different rate to his peers).

Home Education is expensive and I am wondering if you mean that his learning is being provided by the local education authority. A statement of Special Educational Need (as no doubt your autistic son has) will be crucial in getting him all the help he needs.

I could ramble on here as this is a subject passionate to me but feel free to pm me if I can be of any help.
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!

Morning, have the school tried giving your son something to 'fiddle' with when he's sitting down?

I have worked with ADHD children and my DS (12) displays many characteristics although hasn't been diagnosed. I always make sure that if young childen need to sit, they are given a kooshi ball to fiddle with - it seems that if their hands are busy then their bottoms remain on the seat. Even now DS (year 8) has to have a piece of blue tack to fiddle with in class to maintain his attention. It might be worth a try with your son.

Another strategy to aid concentration when working is to sit the child in a corner, ie facing a wall with another wall to one side - it sounds harsh but does minimise distractions and enables them to focus on the task in hand long enough to complete it.
