Confusion about my CC limit

I have had for several years a Lloyds TSB credit card. About three weeks ago I ask if I could have a credit limit increase as I was about to make a large purchase (which I would of been able to pay off before I was charged interest, not that I told them that) I was told that my current limit of £3500 was as high as it could be. I then went onto my online account which told me I was pre-approved for a platinum card at a lower APR so I decided to apply for it. The card was sent out to me last week. I looked online today and found that my credit limit on the new card was £5000 plus I still had the old card (I was under the understanding it would be cancelled) So three weeks ago I needed a limit of £4250 for my one off purchase and was told I had as high a limit as possible. I now have available £8500.

How can this be?
