Hi all -
I hope everyone is well! I am currently studying NVQ 2 in hairdressing to gain a skill as at the moment I work 9-5 in customer services so I wanted to gain a lifeskill that I could use when I needed it. I have just landed myself a Saturday job in a popular local salon 9-5 obviously starting from the very bottom, sweeping and tea making etc but with my course will hopefully speed up pretty quick to washing hair, colouring blow drying etc. Anyway I was just wondering, I am 22, do they have to pay me minimum wage for a Saturday or can they pay me what they like? I have a trial run this Sat but they haven't yet mentioned the pay. I am really happy to get this to back-up my course and although i'll be working 6 days a week it will cut down my spending by a lot and earn me some to pay off my debts.
Thanks in advance all

They should pay you minimum wage, just because it's a Saturday and part time doesn't have any effect on it.0

laura, i would be surprised if they paid you more than minimum wage. i worked for a salon on saturdays when i was i was 15 and i'm lucky if it was £2 an hour! I know it should have been more but i was in love with the idea of being a hairdresser! anyway when i left school i got an apprenticeship at a salon, doing the tea and sweeping, washing hair and stuff and college one day a week and this was minimum wage. but look at it as extra income and part of your course and once you are qualified you can do people's hair in their homes etc and charge what you think is appropriate, so look at it as an investment. better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb that half way up one you dont! i heard that somewhere, cheesy i know!taken on second job + £160 per month
rejigged my bills + £190 per month
got cheaper car to run + £40 per month
got two liftsharers + £120 p/m
given up smoking since 31/12/2008 + 180 p/m0 -
Bear in mind that if you're an apprentice doing NVQ, you will most likely get around £2 per hour - I speak from knowledge as that's what one of my clients pays their staff. HOWEVER if you're only working there on Saturdays, I have no idea what they would do but again, expect less than NMW as they are legally allowed to do that I believe. Best thing to do is phone them and ask as I doubt anybody here (including me!) really knows for sure.0

Just to let you know I started there on Saturday and they are paying me £30 a day @ 9-5. they said it's usually £25 a day but because i'm 22 they have made it £30. I read the link posted above and anywhere you are training or an apprentice they do not have to pay you minimum wage.
Thanks allMember of Quidco and Dooyoo
