I am in my last weeks payment of job seekers and my redundancy pay out installment ends in December. I still have not got a job and am panicking.

What are my options as my wife has a ful time job as a teaching assistant and we cannot live on one wage.

I could go full time with my self employment earning royalties for music/photography but at the moment it's earning only a few Hundred a year in it's early days. Would tax credit be an option ?

  • I was in a similar position to you a couple of years back...

My partner didnt return to work after maternity leave and claimed JSA for around 6 months until it ran out. After this point she decided not to go back to work at all and we ended up pretty skint all the time. The only thing that helped us a little bit was things like housing benefit were recalculated, etc to take into consideration only one wage was coming in, etc...

If I remember rightly our income was based on my full time wage, working tax credit, child tax credit and a small amount of housing/council tax benefit... I dont think we were entitled to anything else.. to be honest the whole point of the tax credits are to boost low income, etc...

Yeah my JSA continued after 6 months. If went from contributions based to income based. Still got the same amount every week though. Hope that helps in some way.

I'm pretty much certain that if you haven't managed to find employment within the six months, when it ends, the JC do another review and extend it for another six months. I could be wrong. It's best to ask the people at the JC.

    You are wrong.

Once entitlement to CB JSA ends, you are assessed for IB JSA. If you have a partner working full time, you will not be entitled to this. However, you may continue to sign on in order to receive NI Credits.

OP, your entitlement to Tax Credits/ LHA/ CTB etc will depend on how much your partner earns?

Yes I've checked for you. Another review is carried out and the JSA is extended to another six months and so on. As long as you are looking for emloyment.

    Please stop posting incorrect information!

JSA doesn't just stop. Even if it is IB JSA. You receive something (the same amount you received while signing on) after the review/assessment.

You really do not know what you are talking about. You do not continue to receive payment if you have a partner in full time work.

Please stop posting blatantly incorrect information. You are helping no one.

JSA can end quite easily if you are on contributions based. It depends on how much national insurance you have paid in the past, etc...

You can claim other types of jobseekers such as income based or hardship but it all depends on your domestic circumstances and if you have a partner in full time work I believe you arent eligible for anything other than contributions based.

This is correct as I have the T-shirt. No JSA after 26 weeks as wife worked more than 24 hours a week even though she was on a low income. The only thing that changed was the amount of housing and coun cil benefit which increased.

Yes meant well. Checked by ringing and asking. Seems misunderstood.

Apologies for being a bit abrupt; I've deleted my post.
