Sale Dress in the wrong size, is it worth it?

Hi,

I've just being trying to convince myself whether or not it would be worth buying a wedding dress that was say one or two sizes to big, if it was in a sale for 50-60% off. Would you be able to get it altered and it still look the same and be worth it?

Its not for me, im on my Chief Bridesmaid duties, but what if we find a lovely dress, cheap price but the wrong size?

(I lurk and post here all the time, but cant remember anyone posting a similar thread, but apologes if their is one)

My dream dress is a 14, I'm generally a 12, and when I tried it on last year (long story!) it was a bit too big.....so I would say as long as it is only 1 or maybe 2 sizes you should be OK, but Lindaatno9 is the best one to answer things like that.

Where are you thinking of having any alterations done - at the shop you bought it from?

All depends on the dress style. If there is major corsetry going on inside then that's a job in its self, so to have to take in side seams, bust seams, back seams etc to get an even bodice fit, you're going to be looking at costs!! Major alterations to bodices can start from about £80+ in this instance.
Sometimes, buying something too big thinking it's a bargain, doesn't turn out to be so much of a bargain when you have to then add the alteration charges on top.

Thanks Linda, thats what I was thinking. But if we went for something with no corset and was simple say this for example

  • my advice would be only go bigger not smaller so it can be altered downwards (you cant make make them bigger easily) and the general advice is no more than 2 sizes.
  • Some dresses come up on the small side anyway. My Ronald Joyce is an 18, but fits more of a 14-16. The 16 mainly because it's a corset bodice so can be let-out

For one it's going to depend on the bust. I've just altered a Jenny Packham for a customer and the cut of the dress made the bustline "sag" It was lifting the shoulders and adjusting the side seams. Along with the hemline it was around £80 so it all depends how that bustline (plunge neckline) works at the moment.
As a general rule, dress shops tend to order 1 size up to get that "perfect fit" anyway.

Just spotted your thread. I got my wedding dress for £250 (meant to be closer to £1700!), it was two sizes too big but got it altered, cups put in etc for £150. Was definitely worth it!! They made a fantastic job of it and it fitted perfectly! HTH
