Advise needed badly please!

Hi All, I posted a few months ago as I did a really stupid thing and signed as guarantor for an x partner. The bank (Halifax)put a stop on my account without advising me why and it was only when I went in that they said there was a problem with this joint loan. My x then advised me that he had stopped paying for the loan that only had 2 years left to run (he had paid for it for 5 on his own) as he had come out of work. No-one from the bank had contacted me to let me know. They would not talk to me or give me any details to do with the loan, as they said I was not the main person on the account so after they reactivated my bank account I left, moved my money into another account that i had with a different bank and that was that. Since then, the bank have phoned me on my mobile a few times stating that I need to answer certain questions before they will talk to me, I have asked them what it is in connection with but they won't tell me unless I answer certain questions. I have told them, I don't give out personal details on the phone and as they called me on my personal mobile then surely they know who I am. They get a bit snotty but I have told them that if it is important then to send me a letter and I will then gladly respond. It's not like they don't have my address as I also have my mortgage with them. I have now been advised today that my x has been to court and a judge has declared him bankrupt. If this is something he had to do then fine but I am not sure where this now leaves me? He doesn't even pay me maintenance for the kids, he gives them a couple of pound each at christmas. He stated that loads of charges had been added to the loan and it will now be passed to me to pay. I have 4 kids, a mortgage and debt of my own and there is no way I can afford another £466 per month. Can anyone please offer any advise?

Thanks NIcci

I'm sorry to hear of your problems but he is right if it is a joint loan the total will fall to you to pay.

  • Thanks very much for your swift reply. Ah well there is nothing more I can do, I can't pay it as I am only just keeping above water now and seems as though they won't talk to me when I call I will just have to wait until they send a letter. Do you think they will take off all of his charges for late payments, phonecalls etc if I agree to pay something?

Its certainly worth a try. Also you could try and make an agreement to pay over a longer period of time. Why don't you call one of the debt charities and get their advice. CAB, National Debtline or CCCS. come back on here and let us know what they say and we can tell you more the pros and cons of each (as we have all been through debt ourselves!)

    Good luck!
