Smelly cupboard?

Help!

We're living in a terraced cottage which we've been in for a few months, but have avoided tackling the dreaded cupboard under the sink as it really smells! Its quite a musty smell - god knows what the people before kept in there! We keep our cleaning stuff in there and every time I open the cupboard I get a whiff!

I've tried giving it an airing but that did nothing. Any ideas as to what I should tackle it with?

Thanks xxx

  • Baking Soda on a small plate works on smells that linger inside a fridge. Perhaps it might work inside your cupboard. I usually keep a solid air freshner inside my cupboard under the sink.

A musty smell usually indicates damp/mould. Afraid you are going to have to grit your teeth and stick your head in there. There are many remedies for masking the smell, but that will not solve the problem, could be a leaking tap joint, or sink u bend.

Initially although not very MSE you may have to buy a mould inhibitor/treatment.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.
  • Thanks guys! I don't mind getting in there and giving it a good clean, I just wasn't sure what the best thing was for it!

I will attack it this weekend! xxx

We had the same problem when we moved into this house. It turned out to be a very slow leak at the back of the cupboard from one of the pipes. Not a big enough leak to actually make the sort of puddle that would alert us to the problem...it turned out that like a lot of kitchen cupboard shelves they were just cheap chipboardy stuff in the middle and this was just absorbing all the water over goodness knows how long until it stank like an old swamp. Might be worth running your fingers along the pipework to see if there's any slight traces of water.
