Wrong Tax Code?

Options
Hi I hope im posting in the right forum and this is also my first time posting here so bear with me!

I need to know if I am being taxed wrong, well im sure I am but here goes...

I have been working in my current job now for 7months and had the tax code L but then the Inland revenue wrote to me to tell me that it was being changed to BR. I work part time so dont come out with alot of money at the end of the month, enough to cover the bills, now since my code changed im loosing out over £100. I have no other job so what is going on?? I phoned them today only to be informed that I did not pass the security questions and had to put my query into writing! Nothing has changed with me.

Please help what can I do from here??

Thanks!

What do you mean you did not pass security questions??? I've never heard anything like that...

BTW BR means that you are taxed 20% on all your earnings, no personal allowance... Usually for people with 2 jobs, or ANY 2 INCOMES!

Have you ever been previously self employed?
    Do you take pension?

What questions did they ask you?

Security Qu's are asked at the beginning of every call to HMRC, they have to verify the info on screen as to who they are talking.

Have you moved house, changed telephone numbers and not kept HMRC upto date?

If you can post the qu's asked them maybe we can help?

Try calling again, the advisors dont ask the same qu's all the time, theres a whole list of possibles to ask.

There are five mandatory security questions, full name, address, postal code dob and employer or last employer. Most problems arise when there has been a change of address and the caller cant recall the correct address along with postal code as you have to confirm the one that is on the computer. It happens alot with students who move from one student address to another and forget to tell the tax office.

Regarding your tax code are you sure the tax office havent got you down as having two employments at the same time as that is the most common reason, so they may have a previous employment as your main emp with all you allowances against and the one you work at now as your second with no allowances hence the BR ax code. They may not have recived/processed your leaving details.

They are not the full list of qu's that we can choose from, there are others aspects we can ask.
  • Hey thanks alot for your replies.

I only have the one job, I am not receiving a pension, they asked me my name, NI no, address, if I had lived anywhere else, was I a student, lived with parents and current and previous employment. Nothing has changed I have not moved addresss & I have informed them of my employment when I moved jobs.

I am really thinking about phoning them again but im afraid of something being flagged up on my details page they hold of me iykwim? Or would I safer writing to them but its so time consuming.

    Thanks again:o

Yes, I know that as an accountant who deals with HMRC on daily basis, I have just never met a person who did not pass the basic questions!

    You have informed them?
Did you not give your P45 to your new employer? Or complete P46 "employee without P45"? Are you sure your new employer registered you as his employee??

One of our employees had a problem where no P45 or P46 was completed by him or submitted by payroll and he struggled for months to get anything from HMRC. They ignored P11D's for 18 mths, his P60 etc and he now has a tax bill for about £5k.. but he was self-employed before which makes even more mess in their systems...
However at least they did tell us that we are not showing as his employer...

How long have you been working for this employer?
