Breadmaker help - no sugar!

Argh I'm halfway through putting the ingredients in the breadmaker and realised I'm completely out of sugar! Is there any way of making bread without the sugar? I have jam but thats about it lol... :o

The sugar makes the yeast work, so i don't think you can do without it.

You can use honey if you have some in the cupboard. I always use it instead of sugar. Even if you don't have any though just add everything else and leave it out. It will still work. I've forgotten a few times before and still ended up with a decent loaf.
  • No honey... the only sweet things I have are jam and chocolate, neither of which I think will work :(
  • I have also used honey when I have run out of sugar - make my bread by hand though. Bread turns out ok when I have made it this way.
  • I never use sugar when I make bread but I always do it by hand. I just use flour, oil/butter, salt, yeast and water and it always rises lovely and bakes well

  • I've never bothered with sugar, dried milk powder or vitamin C powder.

I just use Doves' flour (mostly), Doves' yeast, salt and a splash of oil instead of butter.

I'm sure it'll be fine without the sugar.

I was going to suggest a little bit of milk as that contains a natural sugar, lactose I think, but you've gone, hope it turns out ok.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

If it was apricot jam, it might just vanish sufficiently into the loaf to be undetectable, especially if you used the runny bits fron the side. But not blackcurrant or raspberry!

I don't put in anything except water, flour and yeast.
The flour is a carbohydrate anyway and so has enough sugar to get the yeast working.
  • I lost connection last night so couldn't read the rest of the replies! I decided against it in the end and had a banana for breakfast instead :(
