Argh I'm halfway through putting the ingredients in the breadmaker and realised I'm completely out of sugar! Is there any way of making bread without the sugar? I have jam but thats about it lol...

The sugar makes the yeast work, so i don't think you can do without it.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

You can use honey if you have some in the cupboard. I always use it instead of sugar. Even if you don't have any though just add everything else and leave it out. It will still work. I've forgotten a few times before and still ended up with a decent loaf.0

No honey... the only sweet things I have are jam and chocolate, neither of which I think will work0

I have also used honey when I have run out of sugar - make my bread by hand though. Bread turns out ok when I have made it this way.0

I never use sugar when I make bread but I always do it by hand. I just use flour, oil/butter, salt, yeast and water and it always rises lovely and bakes wellAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00

I've never bothered with sugar, dried milk powder or vitamin C powder.
I just use Doves' flour (mostly), Doves' yeast, salt and a splash of oil instead of butter.
I'm sure it'll be fine without the sugar.0 -
I was going to suggest a little bit of milk as that contains a natural sugar, lactose I think, but you've gone, hope it turns out ok.Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw
apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.0 -
If it was apricot jam, it might just vanish sufficiently into the loaf to be undetectable, especially if you used the runny bits fron the side. But not blackcurrant or raspberry!Val.0

I don't put in anything except water, flour and yeast.
The flour is a carbohydrate anyway and so has enough sugar to get the yeast working.0 -
I lost connection last night so couldn't read the rest of the replies! I decided against it in the end and had a banana for breakfast instead0
