Can anyone recommend a cheap but decent seller of ready-made or made-to-measure silk curtains in London or online? Or even decent faux silk. Just been quoted £650 by a local fabric shop!!!

There is plenty of reasonably priced fabric on Ebay - could you not get someone to make them for you, ask around your friends and you might be surprised, it is a very easy job!
Alternatively somone like Paul Simons say they will make them to your length "at no extra charge".
Might not be ideal to get silk though, not that easy to clean!
Good luck! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Have you tried international ebay?
There are a lot of Thai sellers with loads of silk items, its always worth asking too, as a lot of them will make anything you want.
What type of silk was it you were looking for?Just because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right0 -
Next do nice faux silk curtains, not sure if they do real silk though.Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

I bought a pair from Asda !!
It was a couple of years ago. They are lined and were really cheap - about 75% off at least.
I hadn't been particularly looking for silk, but they were such a bargain, I couldn't resist.:p0 -

Watch what the quality the silk is.I never new so many different thread counts with silk till I came to Malaysia. We have beautiful silks here .The only thing would be the cost of the postage..Its like anything else you can have cheap quality and very expensive.0 -
tj hughs (for fake ready-made ones)0

Thanks everyone! Going to be working through all your suggestions.
Unfortunately have already tried the route of getting someone to help me make them but apparently silk's a bit tricky and the only person I know who sews isn't confident enough to work with it!
The silks we've been looking at are dupion (no idea of thread count). It's the kind with the little clumps in it, but not too many.
Has anyone here actually bought made to measure curtains off international ebay? I'm scared there'd be something wrong with them and no shop to go in and shout at!0 -
OK folks, having looked on ebay I'm kicking myself for not having gone there first. I'm seeing lots and lots of beautiful curtains, but very few in the width we need (window is 140 inches wide. Do you think it would look horrendous to have two panels each side of the divide in the curtain pole? Lots of the curtains I like are 50 inches wide, so I could get two pairs of them?0

Cant you get different curtain poles without the divide? I've never had curtains yet that are the width I need so I wouldnt worry about that its the norm, I think most rolls of curtain fabric are standard 54 and 48 wide anyway ?
But then again i prefer loads of cloth in them, I hate mean looking curtains
Good choice with the dupion, I have dupion silk curtains in every room, I fell in love with all of the different colours when I was doing up my house and just went a bit nuts.
The dupion isnt bad to sew at all, not like a charmeuse, silk satin or fine looking silk, so if your friend is an experienced machinist she has little to worry about if she was to make them.
Let us know how you get onJust because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right0 -
Thanks deeds. The divide I'm talking about is the little bracket in the middle of the pole to ensure it stays up! So I'd have 4 curtains, 2 each side, if that makes sense. Glad to hear your comment about the dupion. Looks like my options are:
1) go back to MIL and sweet talk her into helping me make them from that
2) international ebay (have seen some lovely ones at halfpricedrapes)
3) investigate other companies here in the UK -thanks for the links folks.
I'll definitely be back to let you know how we get on. I'm so grateful for everyone's response!0
