Indian takeaway Leith area
Options
Hi
Just wondering if any one can recommend an Indian Takeaway in the Leith area of Edinburgh. We used to use the New Masala Pot at Jocks Lodge but they seem to have really gone downhill recently and don't know where else to try. There are loads in this area but the few we have tried haven't been anything special.

you are right in saying there are loads in the area. I haven't used any recently as I moved out of the area a year ago but I found that the Raj was good value and they do deals - usually advertise one on the back page of the evening news (something like a nan bread, curry and a bottle of Indian beer but can't remember price). Used to be that they done food Mon -Thurs at 1980s prices too and I used to think the food was better during the week too I wondered if it was that they were not quite so busy perhaps and took more time over it.
I'm vegetarian so not sure abjout the meat dishes but I have heard meat eaters saying they liked the food but also heard others say it was not as good as it used to be. Might be worth a try though - I only had 2 not so great meals there in 20 years.
The one at the bottom of Easter Road and the one in Duke Street were not so good in my experience (in both cases lots of frozen mixed cubed veg with decent tasting sauces but I could have done that at home with a jar and a pack of veg) but there was one in Albert Street that was better.
I'd recommend the Nepalese place - Gurkha Brigade just near the Playhouse if you fancy something slightly different - bit of a cross between Indian and Chinese some might say but leans more towards the Indian types of food. If you order nan bread from there they are huge - easily big enough for 2 people.0 -
I am not keen on the Raj as the one time I went I found that the chicken seemed re-constituted.
Suruchi 2 in Constitution Street is my favourite - and a little different.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0 -
My local used to be the Shanaz...oh I can taste a Chicken Tikka Masala...oh yum...right at the top of leith walk almost..opposite the playhouse.
Once you have been there a few times, they start putting freebies in with your order. Great!

East India on Brunswick Street is very good, but I was forced to shift my allegiance from them after tasting a meal from Shapla on Easter Road - fabulous! Not sure exactly where on Easter Road as they have always delivered to us. Highly recommended!Free is my favourite price!0

We have been using East India for home delivered food quite frequently and find the food excellent, but will have to give Shapla a try now!I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. Douglas Adams0

Not exactly Leith but the Prince Balti down at Seafield is fantasic, also gives you 10% off if you have your Edinburgh Citicard, or work for council, are nurse etc. The food there is great.0

I think The Raj is great, if a little inconsistant - you can order the same dish 2 nigts in a row (not that i have mind...) and it'll be different both times! Tasty both times, mind you... and if you go, be sure to buy a jar of their home made "Bengal Tiger" Mango Chutney. Mmmm....
Suruchi on Constitution St. is good, as mentioned above. Not sure if Britannia Spice on Commercial St. do take aways...0 -
Just to update, have tried Shapla and it was lovely, Thanks for the recommendation, it can be my local from now on0

Not sure if it'll deliver to all of Leith, but Sitara Spice in Stockbridge is superb, some really unusual stuff on the menu and if you like your curry hot this is the place to go....Number 86 - Stole a car from a one legged woman... I'm just trying to be a better person0

(Embarassingly, I now just need give half the order, and the guys can finish it off, then tell me my name and address. I think that is what you call 'predictable'. The shame!)Free is my favourite price!0
