Can I claim back student loan?

Hi all,

Hope someone can help me!

I was made redundant in June. Started a business and have had no salary since. For the 4 months I was paid whilst employed I made £460 payments to my student loan via PAYE

This was based on an assumption I was going to earn £30,000 over the year

I would need to earn £20,000 just to have to pay as much as I have already

To make it simple, imagine I have contributed £460 so far this year, but come April I have only earned £14,500, would I be able to claim back the whole £460?

I know I could with tax, but this is a loan, so I'm unsure if once it's gone, it's gone

Thanks for any help

    Cheers Clapton.

I this something i would just declare on my tax return? or would i need to chase the SLC?
  • Whilst I'm not certain of the specifics in this instance, if you have to deal with the SLC, be prepared to grind your teeth down to a wee nub in frustration at their incompetence...

File everything in triplicate, send via recorded post, etc.
    They are crooks.
For the avoidance of doubt: I work for an IFA.

Tt isn't automatic like tax refund... you have to specifically ask HMRC

My only experience of the SLC so far is receiving statements every year that are 3 years out of date

    Not promising!
