My Hotel Cancelled our Booking

My partner and I booked online to stay 2 nights in Brighton on the 30/12/09. We paid 50% upfront by card. We received a call from the hotel the next day, telling us that the Hotel would be closed for refurbishment and that they would refund us our money. Are they allowed to do this? Should they honour our booking or at least provide us with alternate accomodation. The T's & C's mention their rights but not ours. Does anybody have any advice?

They're closed for refurbishment on New Year's Eve? I find it difficult to believe. Try contacting the local tourist office.0

Legally yes they are allowed - especially if the rooms are not going to be available -how can they honour your booking if the room is not available for use?
Also, they have given you notice & refunde dyour deposit - its not ideal, but at least you have your money back.0 -

Find another hotel? If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

It sounds like they simply didn't stop taking bookings at the right time.
I think it is a good thing they contacted you straight away. Other people have actually gone to stay at hotels only to find them closed0
