Does anyone have any experience of studying with the Open University?

HI I too have been studyig with the OU. My first was in 2997 which was an 'openings' 10 point course which was staying in touch by telephone. There are also forums which are a great help especially in the upper levels when people who have done your course before often hang around the forums and encourage you or recommend books etc.
In 2008 I did a 60 point course and we met once a week. The forum was very lively and helpful. In 2009 I have just (October) finished a 60 pointer and a 30 pointer. There were tutorials (face to face) but not each week. The forums were mainly very helpful except some snotty newbies objected to the older ones hanging around.
Some courses are by internet only though i believe you have the chance to ring a tutor or email any problems (you do on most courses). I am doing a music one at the moment which is by internet.
I have realy enjoyed my time so far with the OU. Any short comings in my course are down to me. I had a few personal problems this year and I believe this was reflected in the low quality of my work. Of course, I am still waiting for theexam marks and may have a big surprise!!
I would say definately go for it.0 -
Forgot to say. You can apply for financialhelp if not work and/or if earning less than 16k but on a first come first served basis.
If you like the idea of paying off a course monthly theysend you details of OUSBA -I have been paying for my two courses monthly and, sadly due to being unemployed , got into a bit of difficulty paying the direct debits for the last two months. They have been very understanding and I am paying off the last bits now.0 -
I love the Open University for lots of reasons

I really like being able to study in my own time, in my own home using great materials.
I can't wait to get back to it after our baby is born next year:T:jMummy to 2 small 4 year old bundles of mischief!:j0 -
Please can anyone tell me if you can do it just from home as disability will not allow travel. Thank you.0

Yes, you can absolutely do it from home - even if your course has an exam, a home examination can be arranged on the grounds of disability.
Have a look at http://www.open.ac.uk/disability/0
