I bought my 2 year old one from Asda at Christmas. It was their own make and I think it's compatible with ELC and Brio track as well. It was about £7 for 100 pieces and he plays with every  day.:smileyhea0

I meant either electric or battery operated.
He has a wooden set, just thought he'd enjoy an upgrade for his birthday next month.0 -
Brio wooden railway items are fantastic. Very well made and sturdy enough to withstand a toddler bashing them about!
It is expensive, so if price is a worry, check out shops own brand wooden railway. Early Learning Centre and Tesco do it. If you go for the cheaper brands, do check the tracks are made from a single piece of wood. Some have a plastic peg on to join tracks which isn't very strong and it is easily broken off.
It's a worthwhile investment buying it. I've got a 9 and 7 year old who started out with a simple figure of 8 when the youngest was 2 years old. They built up their collection with gifts over the years, and they still play with it now. Here I go again on my own....0 -

They had it for £50 before Christmas with free popup tent.
I see they have a Thomas Steam Along Set which looks ok, anybody got it?0 -
We've got Thomas & Terence Deluxe Action Set, Thomas Medium Set and an accessory set from Argos (extra track and points).
Downside to 2 sets is that Thomas is supplied in both, but I bought Gordon, James and Percy on 3 for 2 at Toys R Us last November. My boys are 3 and 4 and have used the pieces to make one big track and is a welcome alternative to the wooden track, and the batteries are lasting well.
The Steam Along Set is £24.99 on Argos website0 -

My DS has the steam along set and loves it, but there isnt much in it. You cant really vary the layout much.
Im a firm believer in the best train sets to get are wooden ones. Countless places sell compatible bits so you dont always have to buy Brio. My son has 8different train sets (dotted all around different family houses) and its the wooden one that gets played with the most and at Xmas and Birthdays we can add to it by buying special Thomas pieces or trains and he is delighted. Trains are all he really plays with so he gets great enjoyment out of his.
Id say its wooden train sets all the way. Im sure they last longer too, no worries of an adult standing on a plastic bit and snapping it.Bringing up 2 handsome boys and 1 gorgeous girl the MSE way!Joseph born 19th December 2001Matthew born 8th August 2007Tara born 23rd January 20110 -

Yep, we got both! ....and the free tent.
As Katyag says, the layout is quite small. But it's standard track so you can add to it. The steaming is very 'cool' - in both senses of the word!!!!0
