DVD rental and TV series

Options
Cinema Paridiso who I am currently with seem to have taken a turn for the worse and I am not getting any of my top 15.....not sure why they have gone downhill but the last couple of weeks have been pretty bad...

So I am thinking of freezing my account and going to someone else. I tend to watch TV series as I am disabled with a long term illness and it's the kinda of thing I can manage at the moment so it's providing a bit of a life line.....

Anyhoo does anyone know of a DVD rental service that is good for TV series? I've tried Blockbuster and they were slow and again I didn't get my top few very often. I did also have a Tesco trial over the summer but again a bit slow and never got any of my top titles, not sure if it was because I wasn't a fully paying member....

Any suggestions, much appreciated....

If you did the Tesco trial, Lovefilm probably won't allow another (I know they wouldn't with me).

I've just cancelled Blockbuster for the same reason you've cancelled Cinema Paradiso - they suddenly got slow and sloppy and I was lucky to get a top 20. I wonder if it's because more people are supposedly staying at home, and the DVD companies have got busy.

They all seem to be pretty much the same these days - it may just be worth trying for any free options/cashback deals you can find and see which works best for ou - at least then you won't have spent much if they don't work for you.

Personally, we're not bothering again and are just picking up the odd DVD as we want to watch it from Amazon, eBay etc - although I can understand how with series that may not be an option financially.

Just a thought - some libraries operate a 'books on wheels' service - would this be of any use? DVDs are normally between £1 and £3 for a week, so if they have a good range it may work out the same/better than the normal DVD rental firms.

    :)

Lovefilm are good via quico if you havnt used them before
tesco are slightly cheaper but not such a long trial or as much cashback (powered by lovefilm so cant have 2trials)
    youve already tried blockbuster
have you tried Lidlmovies? 1month free trial at the minute (couldnt find a cashback site that had this)- is powered by outnow/outake or something like that. Signed up on Monday and first discs arrived today, also on monthly basis slightly cheaper than tescos

I have heard of people just buying them second hand on Ebay/Amazon then watching them and relisting them (obviously someone would have to go to the post office to send them on). I'm not sure how prices are these days but might be worth doing some research. If you aren't watching new releases that depreciate in value quickly it might be worth it. Even if you loose £10 on each boxset you might be break even with Lovefilm rental...depends how quickly you get through DVDs of course.

I'm still getting my top 20 movies sent out within a day or two of returning the last ones with Lovefilm, and i get box sets too. They always send the disks in the right order, which Blockbuster could never seem to manage.

That's a pretty important thing with TV series, I find. :rotfl:

Thanks so much for all your help....

Earthmother that's what happened to me, it was like overnight I stopped getting my top 15 so I switched to Cinema Paridso and then the samething happened again....except now I don't even get my top 20....

I wouldn't qualify for cashback as I have used up my free trial obviously with having the tesco trial....

Does anyone know how freezing works? ....no-one has got back to me at Cinema Paridiso probably with all the problems with the postal strike (another reason I considered I amy not be getting my top 20 is that maybe they are all stuck in the the backlog...)

Presumably you freeze your account and then you use the weeks you haven't used when it's unfrozen?

  • I've got lovefilm at the moment and they're really good at sending stuff in the right order... v. important for my gossip girl addiction *hangs head in shame*

DVD choice used to send out bonus discs with the main DVD but I think they've gone out of business now.

If you have a problem not getting your top DVD choices then reduce your list online. I only have my top 5 on my list now after lovefilm kept sending me very low priority ones. It's working well so far and I'm getting new releases every time :)
