I would stay away from Ulster Bank if you like good customer service. I've finally started moving my money away from them after being a customer for nearly 20 years. I was getting fed up of the cheeky staff when I called the branch. Actually, maybe just make sure you don't choose University Road Branch, the rest of them might be fine!

Maybe it's because they're having to deal with students so much. I find nice staff are a bloody nuisance because they seem to want a lengthy chat with anybody they happen to know.
Anyway, I don't use branches very often and have no complaints about Ulster Bank's online banking.

The Northern bank is just as bad. I get a mini-statement every couple of weeks from the Autobank because they now only issue a statement every 3 months

Does Northern not provide statements online that you could print off?

I think so, but I don't like banking online.

I hope you're not saying that students deserve poor customer service!

Unfortunately I'm not a student anymore and I'm still getting their poor service.

One example was when I called to arrange an overdraft (it was interest free on the account I had at the time), and heaven forbid, I rang at lunchtime! I put through to a manager and was told that lunchtime isn't generally a good time to call! Well, excuse me, but lunchtime is the only opportunity I have to make calls.

I got better service when I was bringing my savings into the bank inside my Henry Hippo!
