    Take your ball of dough, shape into a fat sausage and then cut into thick slices - no rolling it out at all! :D

    When brushing the tops with egg or milk don't let it run down the sides, this also stops them rising. I also think using buttermilk gives a much lighter scone.

    Sour milk or milk with a drop of lemon juice added will give a good result too.

    My grandmother always used sour milk for her scones. They were delicious.

    I haven't made scones in ages - I might do some tomorrow - the only trouble is that I can never stop at one or two or.......
