I would say that the homemade smoothie would count as more than one definitely but not all 5. It depends on what fruit is being used and if the whole fruit is being used.
For example, if you used banana, strawberry, and apple for your smoothie then I would count that as 3 portions. As they are fruits with enough different vitamins/minerals and antioxidants in.
I would then try and get the other portions from veg like carrots, broccoli, spinach etc.
The 5 a day recommendation is just that, a recommendation. There are people that I know that are always getting niggly colds etc, but who eat healthily and would say they are getting the 5 portions a day.
I personally eat 2-4 portions a day, some days more. I'm very rarely ill and I work in a shop that has thousands of people a day come in with all sorts of colds, coughs and ailments. I must just have a reasonable immune system.
One of the main reasons experts recommend 5 a day is they are hoping that people will eat a range of different fruit and veg so that they get the minerals, vitamins, fibre needed to be healthy.
To make the smoothies cheaper, there is no harm in using frozen at all, especially if you are making smoothies with fruit that you have had for 4/5 days, the vitamin C in them would have deteriorated rapidly so frozen is probably a better bet there. Also tinned is fine, can work out a lot cheaper and less possible wastage.
Hope I've made some sense.0 -
