Assuming you don't have any washing soda - if there are no obvious marks/whiffy bits on what you're washing I'd just put it in the machine as normal without the powder. There should be some residual powder left in the machine.0

I was going to suggest trying just washing soda if you have it. About one cupful I would guess. I have in the past done a load of washing, hung it on the line to dry, and on returning to the kitchen spotted the washing powder still sitting on the counter!! Careful inspection of the washing showed it no different to normal!
Not suggesting the abandonment of washing powder per se, just saying you can get away with it sometimes!!You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
If it doesn't need any special stain treatment then there should be enough residual powder in the machine pipes to deal with it. In fact it is a good idea to run the machine without adding powder once every month or so to clear the pipes through! If you really feel you need to add something then some grated soap should do the trick.

use some soda crystals ,i always use half and half with every wash
just on their own will be fine too0 -
Most manufacturers of washing powder give a recommended dosage for washing but in my opinion, it's far too much. I use half the recommended amount per wash and if it's a particularly dirty load, I add some soda crystals. Every 9 or 10 washes or so, I wash without adding any kind of detergent and we all smell ok, lol.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

If you've ever washed towels without powder but looked at the water during the wash cycle - you'll see how much powder is left in the clothing. One wash with no powder at all should make no difference. I'd pre-treat any stains with tablet soap and bung in the WM as is.0

just under 1/4 cup grated white soap and 1/4 cup soda crystals will get your stuff clean. Put ingredients straight into the drum rather than the drawer to prevent clogging.0

Thanx for all your posts. I put in some soda crystals and some grated soap and it came out lovely, nice clean smelling bedsheet too.
