Anyhow, im off to get slashed now so i'll leave you with some pointers....

When you look at your ipconfig /all you need to make sure the IP is the same network as the default gateway.

default gateway should be something like 192.168.0.1 (DNS is same)

IP should be similar to default gateway but not the same, as long as its within the 192.168.0 range.

If this is not the case your auto-IP is not picking the correct IP's up. Make sure the router is all up and running before turning the p.c on, that way the router can assign your computer with a correct IP.

If this still fails I would try manualy asign IP's - someone can help you with this, its quite easy.

Now, open cmd again and type

ping 127.0.0.1 - this will ensure loopback is working, you should get replies, if it says timed out then you have a prob with network card.

    Then....

ping 192.168.0.1 - this will try ping the router from your p.c, again we want it to reply and NOT say time out.

If this still doesnt work, do you have a firewall installed? If you have, completely close it down (just for testing purposes) and try ping the router again....

Hope you start having more luck!!

Silly question really but is the wire that goes from the router to the pc called RJ-45 (Wheres the best place to get one) as i need to wire another pc up to it, i think i must be mad

just go to any pc store and ask for a network cable, a 'crossed' network cable.
The crossed bit is important ;)

as regards the lappy, try using the windows network wizard and setting it up again that way, making sure to get the network name right, and also making sure in network settings that 'obtaining IP and MAC address are both set to automatic :)

Can you try with another computer though a wired connection using a diffrent cable?, If that dont fix it, try returning it to netgear, they are normally pritty quick at sorting these things out!

    Thanks Tom :-)
