Transplanting a tree.

My neighbour has offered me a yew tree which they were cutting down. It is about 6 ft tall. will it survive the transplant?

Doubtful ... but now is definitely not the time to transplant as the growing season is in full-flow!

Add the to that the possibility (hope?) of a dry summer and I don't see the tree surviving.

Quite apart from that, have you considered the logistics of physically moving a 6ft yew?

Thing is what have you got to lose? They don't want the tree and are getting rid anyway, so you may as well try (unless they're prepared to hang on to it til Autumn). If it doesn't work out it doesn't work out......

    Good Luck!

It's not up to yew if it survives or not, you have to transplant is well and chuck loads of water at it. :o

nothing to lose right? just might be very heavy, and needs a big hole in the soil!
  • A tree normally has a 10% reduced chance of survival for every foot in height , according to a aboroculturalist friend of mine. If your neighbour can wait until the winter then have a go then but if you must do it now then put as much water retaining material as possible round the root ball and retain as much of the surrounding soil as possible.
    Good Luck
