scammed - what was I thinking

Options
So I fell for a scam, special offer of £1.20 instead of £159.99 for making money online. Yes I know I should have known better  Anyways I'm then told in the small print that after 7 days I will be charged $79 a month. They give you two phone numbers, one for US people and one for international (both US numbers though) neither number works so to cancel I have to write to them, which I will be doing tomorrow and sending it registered.

Anyways the company has many different money making sites all same address & phone numbers. The main site has fax & email so I've contacted them through both.

If I was to cancel my bank card could they still get money out?

Best option imo is to explain the situation to your bank (if you can find a real person) which may agree to stop any payments going out.

Block them through you're bank. You should be able to trace details through the original payment they took.

Did you agree to a Continuous Card Recurring Authority if so it appears only they can stop it.

If you set it up as a direct debit then yes you can easily cancel through bank, if you set it up as a continuous payment from a debit card then they can get the money regardless of what you do to your card.

I'd still call the bank though as I recently had an issue with that blasted XBox live and although they said they couldn't stop the money if it was taken they could mark it up as a potential fraudulent payment which would make it easier if I needed to try and reclaim it later.

A continuous credit authority on a credit card is as bad as one on a debit card..neither can be cancelled.

If its a card payment , report your card as lost , and no card authorised payments will go through

  • Plenty of legit info out there on making money online for free. Unfortunately there are many who sell the dream of making lots of cash, but all they are really selling is the dream. The business model is really quite uncomplicated and you don't need to pay anyone to know "the secrets".

Set up a site, use blogger, wordpress or your own host, then write some content, then put up some affiliate links or adsense. Legitimate affiliate networks will help you for free, google has a ton of free info on how to maximise adsense info (why wouldn't they - the more you make, the more they make!).

As SunnySusie said in #9 there are plenty of legit ways out there. I spend my life doing this sort of stuff, sorting through the rubbish to find the gems. I've rarely recommended much to people and only just now have I recommended something openly to the MSE crowd (just posted on the referrers board), because I wanted to find one thing that could work for everybody/anybody for zero cost that had real legs.

I hope you manage to get your card cancelled/etc OK.

    Good luck.

I fell for this a little while back, you didnt see it in Facebook by any chance did you?.

Anyway I managed to find an email address to contact them. I sent an emaiil to to tell them to cancel it. I got a reply saying that they had. I kept checking my card statements and nothing appeared so I thought great it has really been cancelled then. Then about 2 months later payments started. I rang my card supplier, reported it as unauthorised payments and cancelled the card, I got my money back and new card.
    Comping again
