Jane it's extraordinarily uncanny how what you wrote is what my manager and assistant manager used to do. I too work for a well known retailer. Everything you wrote about taking (long) breaks together and spending hours and hours away from the service floor, leaving me to deal with it, especially on the busy Saturdays is what they did to me. And to top it all off, they didn't really do any work.
One day, a neighbour came in as it was her local. She was appalled with the amount of customers in the shop with only me having to deal with it. She sent a letter to the head office and said it wasn't the first time she had left the shop without being served (she just added that).
What followed next was head office sent people to spy on the shop. The two managers were dismissed.
Worst case, ask someone to complain. I was lucky that I didn't have to do that, especially since from my experience all managers usually stick together. Although I don't know how much more I could have taken. Anyway it all worked out. I've since been promoted to weekend supervisor and now have a wonderful new manager.0 -

The company benefits (happier customers and employees) and the customers get better service.

I'd go with as0ta's suggestion of getting someone to complain about the poor member of staff all on their own on a saturday, having to deal with so many customers, that it was very slow getting served.
Also, looking at it from another angle, it could be taken as a compliment that they do trust you to run the store on your own... (something to put on your CV!)Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

Thank you Nile and Pinkshoes. I agree, it's a win, win situation. The reason I never complained to the manager or head office is because another girl did just that. And her life was made hell until the manager dismissed her for petty reasons. Like I said, all managers tend to stick together.
Pinkshoes, it would have been nice to think that they left me alone because they trusted me to run the store but the reality was that they just didn't care. There used to be so much theft that it was frightening to imagine that the company were going to blame us and investigate us! The manager and her friend used write it off and report to head office, covering it by saying we were in a high risk area.
Anyway, I agree, the best way without any trouble would be to get someone to come in and see for themselves and for them to complain.0 -
There is a duty of the employer to consider any risks and hazards against your health and safety at work and put procedures/practices to prevent and deal with them. This is a legal duty by the way.
Have they considered what would happen to you if you were robbed, or that working with the public has a potential of experiencing violence?
Id write to head office, if you get treated in anyway detrimentally for making a complaint you have claims for victimisation.
I wouldnt be surprised if you find that they are taken these breaks together against official policy.0 -
I have to say, some of the OP's post sounds like petty jealousy; they may be friends outside of work, but that is not relevant.
actually I found it quite an important part of the picture - if they are so inseperable it makes it difficult to trust that any complaint against one of the two will be dealt without bias or preferential treatment, essentially a management clicque. Its fine to have friends at work, but not when it impedes the functioning of the business.0 -
