Buying new bed - wooden frame vs divan?

Options
Hiya,

I'm moving into a new rented place next week which is unfurnished. I've seen some good offers online for both wooden frame beds and divans (non-storage ones), but just can't decide what to go for!

Which do you prefer and why? What are the pros and cons of each?

I prefer wooden frames. They last longer because you only have to change the mattress. Also, you can store things under them :)

I have a divan bed and i hate it squeeks on the corners even though nobody ever sits on them i wish when i got it i paid extra for storage underneath. as soon as i get christmas out the way i am planning on buying a wooden on. i have had metal in the past to and find they squeek like mad always had to tighten the bolts.

I think it can be harder to find a matteress cover for one type above the other- if you need splits in it or something...not quite sure- maybe try a bit of window shopping for the covers, just know my mum had big trouble trying to get a cover with a divan for her brass bedstead and ended up with two stores for her options as all the divan sheets had no splits on the corners or something and so wouldn't have worked out.

Maybe see what your options are if you buy one above the other in terms of shopping.

I had a divan one with storage drawers but put too much in the drawers and broke them!

After that Ive had 2 metal frame ones - got 4 under bed store boxes from Wilkinsons and It's miles better - find the storage space so useful.

I do find you need to tighten the screws every so often - mine does not squeak but when I came to move the frame in the summer for decorating the metal bed broke:eek: Id never tightened the screws on that one. So am on metal frame bed number 2 now:rolleyes:

The wooden ones Ive seen look nice and that storage is so useful!

Im not sure which is easier to move if you move house in the future?

The guy who delivered my bed frame put the frame together and it took him nearly 2 hours!

There are pro and cons for both options, and there are good and bad quality for both options.
    • A divan base is better for the mattress than slats that you get on bedsteads.
    • Divans are available with various storage options. However these are designed for bedding etc, and not for heavy items. You wouldn't fill a huge drawer in a chest of drawers with heavy items and expect it to take the weight would you?
    • You can change the mattress on a divan bed the same as you can change it on a bedstead. Don't listen to sales reps who say you must change the divan base each time you change the mattress. If either a divan base or a bedstead is in good condition, then you don't need to change it.
    • Cheap bedsteads do tend to squeal alot. If a divan base squeaks, then it probably does need replacing.
    • I'm not sure what jenniewb means. You only need splits in the vallance if you are using it on a bedstead, not on a divan.
