Overpaid Tax

Hi,

I've just received a letter from HMRC saying that I've overpaid an amount. They don't really make it clear how they will give me this money back. They do state that the return hasn't been checked yet, but the preliminary calculations show an overpayment.

I assume they will check the return and then send me a cheque?

Thanks

Depends, as you mentioned a return, I presume you are talking about Self Assesment. If so then they refund you by the method you indicated on the return (if you put bank details on then its a bank transfer by BACS, if no bank details then its a cheque posted to the address on the return.)

If you weren't expecting a refund and didn't request the repayment on the return, then give them a call and request the repayment, otherwise it will sit on your account to be used against any future tax liability
