Professional subscriptions

Options
Hi, I think you can claim professional subscriptions as an allowance, and also uniform cleaning (for healthworkers). I am PAYE.

I'm filling out my self assessment and can't find where these figures should go. If this is for 08-09, would I get this as a refund, or will it simply change my code for next year?

Any help gratefully recevied :)

You do need to contact your local Tax Office to check what can and cannot be claimed.

You need box 16 on page TR3 "Total amount of allowable expenses" - which is why your best move would be to check which of your expenses are allowable with your tax office

( The general notes SA150 are available online as a PDF at the HMRC website and have a look at the bottom of page TRG13 )

    Could be both !
The tax form has boxes 4 through 13 on page TR5 for your bank details for any repayment due...
The figures on the 08-09 form should be used by HMRC to calculate your PAYE Tax Code for 09-10 so you may get a new notice of coding soon after sending in your form

    Good luck !
  • The Revenue produce a list of the organisations for which they allow a tax deduction for the payment of subscriptions - see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/

There is also guidance on how much you can claim for washing your uniform etc see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim32712.htm This was the latest information I could find although it may have been subsequently updated.

For 2008-09 you should receive a refund from the Revenue. They should also then update your tax code so that relief will be given through your wages from 2009-10 onwards.

You do not have to complete a Tax Return to claim these allowances. Is there another reason why you have one?
