I started a thread last week called heartbroken... I am a wife of someone who overspends and has repeatedly got into unmanageable debt.. which I have then jumped in and helped solve. My lightbulb moment happend last week look at thread.. I don't think his has yet though!

Your shopping bill does seem high I recommend using mysupermarket and maybe getting it delivered so you don't get tempted in the shops... Other than that I think we can get obsessed with the little things like showers but if you are on a water a meter then shower and just once a day is enough...

We moved to a budget Christmas a few years ago... Only kids get pressies and then within reason.. we concentrate on having a good time together as a family and eating yummy food and drinking yummy things.

Welldone you and I can't unerestimate your need to be open and honest with you wife.

As a young'un, does your son REALLY need the second card, does your partner REALLY need that second car?! When i was younger i didn't REALLY need my car, now im in my twenties, and working and live far from home a car is useful, but is this second car more of a luxury for you guys than a necessity?

Hi Thanks. Boys are 15 and 18 so shared shower!! Don't think that will happen. They both play a lot of sport and I would rather be broke than compromise their cleanliness. I have just turned down the water thermostat and fortunately the central heating has not gone on yet this year.

do they go to the gym, have showers at their school they can have after sport lessons etc?! Tell them there is nothing wrong in having a strip wash at a sink!!!
  • Like many schools nowadays, there is no opportunity to shower after sport. Asking for sacrafices is a tricky business so......slowly, slowly. This all quite new still and I don't want to become a miserable old grouch! At least, no more than I am already....

I think I'd ignore reducing the shower idea, certainly it would be a last resort for me to ask my girls to restrict their hygiene. I would concentrate more on the groceries, clothes and car costs, you have huge scope in these areas to cut back without causing too much pain, although you may find that you can reduce toiletries in the groceries line.
    Good Luck
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

Thanks for your message. She knows only too well what the situation is. You know what....now that I've started this thing I am really getting a taste for it. I haven't had a drink in over a week now.....other than a glass of wine with sunday dinner and the thing is I am not missing it at all and saving lots into the bargain. I have replaced my nightly bath with a quick shower, 2 or 3 of which are at the gym and again, I am not missing it. I am excited about the future now, especially when things start to get paid off which is not all that far away

  • hi my daughter used to have a bath every night  but since this money saving lark happened to us she has a shower now, a bath on Sunday which is more of a soak than a bath, never liked the idea of sitting in greasy dirty water myself, my son is 4 years old and has 3 baths per week and wash downs in between,

any way with this combination we are now £200 pound in credit with the gas and £50 pound in credit with the electric and our monthly bills have come down as well and we all smell so sweet;).

so you don't have to cut down on hygiene at all just wash smarter.....

    regards mb
