Slow cooker questions

Having read about all of you and your slow cookers and how great they were, I decided to buy one. I got the cookworks signature 6.5 litre one from argos for a whole 15 pounds. My problem being a) I feel it might be too big for a family of 4, any thoughts welcome... and b) i really want to give it a go but even the book that comes with it doesn't mention whether the food that you throw in needs to be covered with liquid. I am basically looking at making my own meals up as I go along and I seem to be inclined not to measure volumes of meat and veg when doing stuff in the oven, is this okay in the slow cooker (depending on responses I suppose on volume of liquid required when using)

Hope some understands what I am trying to say LOL. Oh, and can help with my query!!:rotfl:

  • lol thats just what i did, i have a 3.5 for two adults so i can make enough for several meals, and then freeze up portions ready for a busier day

you might find you need slightly less liquid as you don't really lose any thro evaporation.

have a read of the slow cookke thread and i'm sure you'll find you are not alone :)

hi hun you dont have to feel you have to fill it up, might be cheeper tho to cook more and freeze some, liquid really depends hun, if i was doing a stew i would cover the meat veg in liquid, but if im doing a whole chicken or beef joint i dont add any as it lets out its own jucie hope this helps

Thanks to you both. The slow cooker threads are huge!! I have chucked everything in already, but the meat isn't covered with liquid. Will top it up and hope it doesn't dry out. I am going with the "suck it and see" idea LOL!

With a bit more hunting I noted someone's suggestion of using a smaller pyrex bowl inside the slow cooker, which I will do next time I am doing smaller portions if not freezing others. It's smelling quite good at the moment though.

Stuck it on for 2 hrs high and doing 4.5 hours low.

MSE forums are so big that I thought my question would get lost in the sea, so much appreciation. Have been reading around a long time, too shy before to post really. I only joined the other day to try and help some one on fancy dress clothes online.

You guys responding made me fell (oops that would be feel!) welcome!!!
  • lol, anytime, and just read what you can as it is a huuuuuuuge forum, but there is a lot of good advice :)
