discharged 3 years and....

still cant get an account, i was advised to not get an account within my discharge period, however when i apply to any bank i get rejected.
it has now nearly been 3 years since my discharge and i am having to use my girlfriends account for a few direct debits but really want one of my own.
i have rung the fsa and they told me to quote banking code 3.1 which basically says that the bank is not allowed to discriminate against bankrupts, however when i say this to the bank they still say no.
hsbc wanted me to produce proof of discharge which i would have to pay for and wrong as it may be, i'm not willing to do this, why should i? i have spent the last 10 years of my life paying out for things and all i want is a bank account, and no one else i know has had to do this.
i have been in touch with the various credit reference agenies and attempted to clean up my profile but they are still holding info on me from years ago and wont remove it.
its getting beyond a joke.

although i have noticed on this site that barclays will give a basic account, now originally i was with barclays and went bankrupt with a lot of their money, if i was to go back to them would i be accepted? or will there still be a grudge against me?

have i made a mistake by not getting an account straight away, even though i was told to not bother getting one. i was actually managing everything fine without the use of one.

a friend of mine went through the same thing shortly after me and he managed to get a nationwide account straight after his discharge ( i have read on here that they no longer offer them now) but when i tried i got rejected, which makes me laugh because i still work and still run a business and my friend is on the dole!!

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have a good chance of getting a Barclays account but if you are having so much trouble I would start at cleaning up your credit file. Follow the sticky on this forum in detail. If everything is marked correctly your bankruptcy should be falling off your file within the next 2 years. What is the date of your bankruptcy (not your discharge date). Make sure all your default dates etc are dated no later than that date. It is quite a slog but very much worth it in the end.

Have you tried the Coop for an account?

Try for the Coop account, this can be done over the phone and is usually painless. I have opened one and told them I had filed for BR and it was approved straight away. Although it is only a basic account you can access it online, which I find really useful.

I opened Halifax Web saver online easy enough, you can do everything except you only get a cash card not a debit card....also worth trying the people you didnt owe money to lloyds let me keep my current account open :T although didnt realise untill I opened the Halifax so now have 2 accounts:beer:

Be careful with Halifax. If they find out your were/are BR they will close the account. They have a strict no BR ever rule

If you went BR in Feb 2007 then you have only been discharged 2 years (providing you got ED at 10 months.) Still you need to clean up the credit file to make sure everything is as it should be or your BR will stay with you longer that the 6 years it should.

  • The proof of discharge you need for the banks you can get by phoning the OR office and getting the official letter of discharge, this is free you do not need the certificate.I have had this prob with Barclays over my on -line.One branch told me i need the cert when i went to my own branch she checked on the branch website which only said "proof of discharge, letter from OR."

just tried halifax account and the t&c's said that you must not have been bankrupt so i cancelled the application.

hsbc wanted the certificate and the offical reciever told me it costs £60.

just checked my dates and it was feb 2006 i went BR, how time flies!
