This thread kind of falls in the same arena as the Debt Free and Fat Free Wanabee, you’ll have to excuse the slight overlap…
As a Money Saving and get fit effort, two of us from the office who live close together have been cycling from the outskirts of London to Central London pretty regularly for the last month, I’ve worked it out to just about 18 miles a day. This works out to about 9 miles each way and between 40 – 50 minutes each way, it’s the same amount of time as it takes for public transport, and you actually get a seat! I’ve never been late to work when I cycle, which used to happen quite frequently on public transport.
The real benefit is that I was spending more than £99.90 a month on transport and this has now been whittled down to somewhere in the league of £21 a month for miscellaneous transport costs. I figure it this way; a zone 1-3 daily travelcard is £7.20, so for every time I cycle into work I’ve saved myself £7.20. If you have a gym membership, cancel it! You won’t need it if you’re getting the exercise when you’re on the way to work, further savings!
If you had told me two years ago that I would be cycling 18 miles a day into work through Central London, I would have laughed. But I do it nearly everyday now. I’m saving loads of money and feeling really good about my health and the lessened impact on the environment.
I’d like to draw attention to Bike to Work Week which is 17 – 25 of June; I hope that perhaps I can convince some of you to pick up your bike and start cycling into work. The more people who cycle the safer it becomes. You’ll save money and you’ll feel great. To keep track of how much money you’re saving and how many miles you’re doing, start a bicycling piggybank in your signature (ie. 18 miles of cycling = saved £7.20). If I can do this, anyone can.
For everyone who spends time in the morning looking miserable in the long queue for buses at Waterloo Station every morning, I’m the cyclist who waves & smiles when I ride by; come join me.
Kind regards,
Samara
