Unexpected extra

Options
Little bit of advice required and also some self trumpet blowing.

As a hobby, I have created a website that give a stats breakdown of the football team I support. Just something to pass away the wee hourse for me.

Last month the Daily Mail contacted me, via the site, to see if I would be interested in helping them put together a section for "Andy Townsends Boot Room". Of course I jumped at the chance and yesterday I was asked to send in my first piece. I am being paid a small amount for doing this (approx £40 a time, which is excellant as it took me about an hour to put it together).

Do I need to keep a record of this and declare anything to the tax office?

  • I would say it depends on your present wages and where they are on the tax threshold, I should imagine if you are going to be doing this more often you will have to declare it but not sure under which rules, as a second job or a few hours self employed or freelance. There may be expenses you can claim perhaps, like use of a room in your house for an office or perhaps internet costs?

I will say I am not totally sure but hopefully this will keep you bumped up a bit and someone will be along soon who can answer all your questions.
Congratulations and good luck with your venture. I hope it takes off.

When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

Could you ask The Daily Mail about it? They must know if they are asking you to do it

I would say that technically speaking you would need to declare it....either by registering as self-employed (which I did for avon, and doesn't affect my full time job tax code in anyway) or by filling in a different form every year to notify of small earnings - but I have no idea what kind of form that is, but I'm sure someone on here will know more, or if not, give the tax office a ring - i rang the self employed helpline and they were incredibly helpful :)

It certainly did, even better today seeing the bit I did printed and with my name on there.

Normally the Daily Mail will give annually to the Revenue details of any fees/ payments made ,so its probaly best to declare it.
