job seekers allowance

Options
My husband has died recently. He had just come off incapacity after having a brain tumour removed last year. He let his life insurance lapse and now my children and myself have only my salary.
Ihave used all our savings to give him a dignified and loving funeral, but it has left me with nothing of any significance.
I have been made aware that if he was paying national insurance, I could claim for some of the funeral expenses. Also If I had young children , i could claim a one off payment, again, if he was paying N.I.
He had worked all his life, apart from the odd time of redundancy, but since his health brgan failing. Over the past four years, he was claiming incapacity, and laterly job seekers allowance.
Does this mean he was not paying N.I.? Or was his NI. payments covered by incapacity benifit and job seekers allowance?
I work 16 hours a week, and recieve working tax credit and child tax credit.
Iam worried sick thatI will not be able to manage, and look after my family.

Thanking you in anticipation

I'm so sorry for your loss ellens.

It might be worth asking this question on the benefits board - I am sure that someone over there will be able to help.

I know it is easier said than done, but do try not to worry too much about this to the point of making yourself ill, you have both yours and your childrens grief to get through above all else.

    ((hugs))

    Hi ellens

Sorry for your loss also. Yes, his NI stamp would have been paid while he was signing on.

    Best wishes

National insurance contributions and bereavement payment:

The only contribution condition for a bereavement payment is that your spouse must have actually paid, in any one tax year before he reached pension age, contributions of Class 1, 2 or 3 up to a certain level.

The condition is treated as satisfied if your late spouse ever successfully claimed incapacity benefit.

Go for it! You need a BB1 form from here

    Best wishes
