Best place to sell books?

I'm decluttering at the moment and have come across crates upon crates of books in the loft (recently moved back home to parents house and mum hoards everything). I'd like to sell the books on, most are in really good condition and some are special editions, there are a few that are not of sale quality but i plan on swapping these for other books on a different site that i'm a member of.

Basically i'm not sure where the best place to sell the books would be, i know ebay and amazon but i'd like to know if any other moneysavers have sold books online in the past and if so where was the best place to sell them?

I have found that Green Metropolis is a good place to sell novels. They sell to raise funds for The Woodland Trust and pay sellers £3 per book, although for hardbacks the seller can add extra for postage.

I've only ever had any monetary success selling books on Amazon - the good points are that they are free to list so not costing anything unless you make a sale, bad points are that you don't often get much per book. Some books I've sold for up to £5 each. They tend to be slow sellers too

I've also old books on ebay years and years ago (too expensive to list now I think) which went very slowly.

I've been able to sell them quickest via car boot sales but only getting pennies as opposed to pounds.

I thought I saw somewhere on the internet which bulk buys books and pays a certain amount whether they are paperback or hardback but sorry cannot remember where I saw this

I've had success on Amazon - was having a total clearout and listed 200 books, over 135 of which sold within a 1 month period - I registered as a business seller during this month, about a £25 fee I think and that reduced the fees on individual sales so it worked out cheaper. I was only a shop for one month, and kept my listings live after my month as a business seller ended (I upped all my prices by 75p to reflect the higher fees I'd pay) and over the next 3-4 months had the odd sale continuing to drip through.

It does depend what your selling - popular paperbacks didn't shift quickly on Amazon, the postage arrangements means even 1p listings can be cheaper bought brand new elsewhere.

A good place to start though - as listing is completely free, you only pay when you sell and you can instantly see what other sellers are charging for the same book. I had several specialist interest/academic type books which may have helped my sales.

Would tend to agree with the above posters, list them on both amazon (where its worth it) and greenmetropolis, you won't sell them quickly but they will slowly sell. There are some limited book listings on play too IIRC.

If you have special editions it might be worth checking to see if they're particularly rare as that will make them easier to sell.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

Lulu's for publishing & selling your own books not second-hand ones

It might be worthwhile taking some round second hand books shops. I got a fair price for some of mine doing that. There are some books I wanted to sell that were going on Amazon for 20p because there were so many copies but I got a pound or so selling them in the bookshop.
  • I'll vouch for Amazon or Ebay, great place to off load your unwanted items. However don't expect to get much for them on Ebay - people want something for nothing nowadays!
  • I love Greenmetropolis and they now have an optional extra where sellers can offer a 3 for 2 deal; good for shifting more books, getting more customers to look, and also of course if you're buying books yourself.
