bank interest certificate for tax return

hello, does anyone know if banks are required to provide savers with certificate of interest earned and tax deducted during tax year for the purpose of helping with tax return or do i have to request it .any help would be appreciated thanks

    Some do it automatically, others you have to request, they will usually turn up within a week in the latter cases.

    If it was coming automatically you would expect to receive it in April/May so I guesss in your case you're going to have to ask.
  • Foxy, you are a mind reader. I have only just learned that these certificates exist: I have never received any and I was wondering what to do about it.

    It is not a good time to use the post, but I can wait for a while, they would just be for my records.

    I was wondering whether the bank would email them, and if it would cost anything.

    I need them from 2005/06 onwards.

    There would be no point in having them emailed as HMRC probably wouldn't accept them.

    Some banks may be able to print one for you in the branch, if you have a branch nearby.
  • At the moment there is no requirement to show anything to HMRC: when I complete my tax return, I just calculate tax paid by grossing up the net interest from my bank statements.

    As you say, paper is probably best so I will wait until the strike is over.

    If all you need are the figures, your bank can provide these over the phone.
