was wondering if you could give me a hand, I really wanted a feather mattress topper but couldnt justifi the cost however I have now been given a king size and single feather duvets now I am trying to work out whats the best way to turn them into a single mattress topper I use sheets and blankets on the bed for hubby (we have two single beds pushed together as hubbys is an eletric bed due to his illness) which cover both beds so it looks like a super king size bed

I'd be looking to acquire another single feather duvet because I'd use the one given to you as a mattress topper and the king-sized as a bed-cover. Proper feather duvets are really much too luxurious to be slipping under a sheet imo. I'd probably use a cheap synthetic one for that purpose as the filling won't travel about. My feather duvet needs to be given a good shake every day to keep the feathers evenly distributed to prevent cold-spots0

We have an old feather duvet which we use under the sheets. I found that I had to shake it out flat to start with, and then I sewed across so that I ended up with six-inch squares instead of long channels - this kept the feathers in place better. I used a walking foot on my sewing machine to keep it steady, but if you haven't got one and are patient it can still be done!
If you then measure back 6" from each corner, you can sew elastic across the corners which you can then tuck under the mattress to keep it in place.
If your two single beds are 6 feet wide when pushed together, then obviously you may need to zigzag the single duvet to the double but that's not a PARTICULARLY good idea, as it may then be too big and have an uncomfortable ridge where the two join. Spread your king-size duvet across your bed - if it's only a few inches short each side then that will probably be fine as you don't usually sleep on the edge of your bed. Just make sure the elastic you've sewn on is long enough to hold it steady (you'll need one-inch wide elastic).
If you end up with a single feather duvet, you can always put it sideways across the foot of your bed - makes a wonderful warm addition in the winter!0 -
