Why do people assume that when people Sell their properties, they then don't utilise this money in other investments?
After my posting I have spoken to my inlaw. He took a chunk of the cash from the sale, and invested it in Gold at $700ish/oz.
Look at Gold prices now and tell me that wasn't good business? It could have gone the other way, but hey that's the nature of investments isnt it.
It sounds like the OP is looking for evidence to support their own preference and theories.0 -

Wow !!
Are you kidding ??
You admire someone who sold their home and then punted a whole pile of the equity on commodoties ???
Talk about reckless.

My sister has married someone who trades in Oil and Gold in Canada for a living.
I am sure he was 'tapped up' for some advice beforehand!
The fact that the Gold was bought when sterling was stronger, well that was good fortune I admit.
Anyway, reckless? Who cares. It's their money.
You can't knock people for taking risk with their investment, be it houses or other assets.
But, you can expect them to live with the consequences of those ventures.
Back to your original point. If someone sells a house at peak, hoping to buy back into the market when there is better value, what's wrong with that? They are taking a punt on the future direction of the market. As long as they accept it might not work, so what?0 -
Even if I had access to the information to make such an investment possible or likely, can you imagine the dinner table conversation when I tell my heavily pregnant wife we need to delay buying a house because I want to invest in gold? Why do people assume that when people Sell their properties, they then don't utilise this money in other investments?

We have never made any house moving decisions on making money, but on providing the best possible home for our family. Apart from the moment of sale/purchase, any values or profits are irrelevant until the moment of death, at which point I won't care any more.Been away for a while.0 -
Re OP - was it worth it?
I seem to have an uncanny knack of buying low / selling high. In the last thirty years I have been through the following - antiques, classic cars, ostriches, stamps, fine wine, whisky, dot com, property, gold and .... next.. well wouldn't you like to know?
Currently sat on such a huge pile of wealth that it may seem odd that I bother to log in here and tell you about it. Perhaps despite my wealth I am unhappy? Oh no - couldn't be better - blessed with health, wealth, houses, family, women, blah blah.
Ahh I know why it is. It is because I - like the majority of those on here bragging - am a sad little tw@ living in utter squalor.0 -

It was impossible to lose money in the dotcom era.
But somehow, I managed to lose plenty, with some margin to spare.
What's this hot tip about tulips then?

Yeah, I'm not 300 years old.
Oh ye of little faith.
I missed the mid-19th century cochin bubble, but I'm breeding chickens, and not just cochins but cochin hybrids, because if ther is one thing I have learnt from my, years:eek: studying under the MSE House Price groupies tutelage its that it is all a cycle, and that my chickens are my nest egg.0 -
