Mortgage Refund in Error

I have just received a letter from Nationwide declaring that in 2007 they sent me two mortgage refund cheques for identical amounts that were cashed. They claim the second was sent in error and now want me to reimburse them. I believe that this was at a time when I transferred my mortgage. Any advice on how to take this forward?

Check to see if both cheques were cashed.
If they were, pay them back.0
