How was the money taken from your bank? If it was by direct debit then get your bank to call it back under the direct debit guarantee.

What was the 99.99 for? If it was a fee to get you a loan then you have indeed been ripped off. If you can't recover the money by recalling the direct debit then keep writing and complaining/demanding your money back.

I'd say you *may* have been ripped off, without details there isn't much that can be said.
It may be a loan application fee that you were then turned down for or it may be a search fee. Either way without details it's hard to say, and the OP must have given some details, (bank sort and Acc no or card number) for this payment to happen, again more detail is required.

yeah you don;t go on the internet to look for a few numbers and these companies 'magically' get your bank details to start taking money, you gave this company your bank details, for what purpose? were there any Ts and Cs?

Do you often stumble around the internet giving your bank details to all and sundry when you have no business with them?

No legitimate company will need to ask for your bank info unless your are setting up 'something' with them. that or you have gone to the companies site and got into the advanced stages of taking out (eg a loan) without reading any of the preceeding webpages or Ts and Cs that explain what you are in the process of doing?

To be honest there are some places like that. We're off to Orlando soon and need a ESTA, from the US Govt to travel (replaces the visa waiver). The ESAT is FREE and available online from the US Govt.

However google "ESTA" and the top hits (albeit the sponsered ones) have a service charge to do the form, one is £20, one is £27, on is $45. All look legit ish, and all say they have no connection with the US Govt but in small print at the bottom. However they exist just to charge a fee to process somethat that is easily done online for free, and I suspect they do well out of it.

These are a legit company as such, but what they are doing is a dubious practice and pretty much a rip off but people will fall for it thinking they have to pay this charge.

However as has been said they OP must have put in details somewhere, the question is did they know they were signing up for some service or was it not clear. It may have been called a "processing fee", "admin fee" "application fee" and may be a rip off but its not clear yet.

    Dear GI,

Had the same problem. I went straight to Manchester Trading standards and was given useful advice. They are breaking a number of consumer protection laws here so I suggest you contact Manchester Trading Standards too and see if we can get these Bandits stopped. Here's a copy of the letter I am sending them for your reference.
I recently received an unsolicited call from one of your representatives offering to obtain a loan on my behalf. He told me that there was unlikely to be any problem getting a loan at an APR of 8.6%. He told me that if I was accepted for the loan, there would be a brokering fee of £99.99. I was then asked for my bank card details to check the validity of the address details etc. I had given over the phone. I was assured that there was no commitment on my part to anything until I had seen the paperwork that was promised to me in the next few days. This would need to be accepted, signed and returned by me before any financial commitment was made on my part. The following evening I received a very similar call saying that everything was looking good and that a final check of my bank details was required. I was again assured that nothing was committed to until they received my signed paperwork. Since then I have received no paperwork, no offer a loan and 2 payments of £99.99 have been deducted from my account.

It is clear that I have deliberately been given misleading and false information by your representative/s so that your company could take money from my bank account without my consent.

After taking advice from Manchester Trading Standards, I demand an immediate refund in full of £199.98. If this money is not in my account within 14 days I will be taking further legal advice.

I am in no way defending this company but I think legally they are allowed to keep £5 to cover their ''costs''.
