Credit history

Just moved back to the UK after living in the Netherlands for 15 years.

Consequently, I have no credit history in the UK and therefore can't apply for anything!
This is very annoying as I have a healthy amount in my bank account.

I wanted to change banks, but no other bank will accept me, because I have no credit history. I tried to get sim card for my mobile from Virgin at a tenner a month, but they won't accept the direct debit, as I have no credit history.

I think you all get the gist of this now.

I have registered myself on the Electoral Register, but that won't be seen by the credit companies until the 1st of December.

I can't believe how this system works. I have had lots of Direct Debits, etc in the Netherlands with steady employment for the last 15 years, never defaulting on any payments, but this has no effect on my credit history here.
I thought we are all part of the same European Union? Surely the system should be able to take into your credit history across the common market?
Well, obviously not. :mad:

Anyway, enough ranting.
My question here is, is there any way I can improve my credit rating any quicker?
I may have excasabated the situation by applying for the direct debit through Virgin and being turned down.
Hopefully not, but there has to be some way to get on track again?
