Do You HAVE To Retire?

Can anyone help, my Dad is coming up 65 and works as a Groundsman for the Local Council, my Mum says she read something about a new law whereby 65 year olds have an option to stay on or at least be offered the opportunity? She may have got a bit confused by the info she's read but I just wondered if anyone could throw some clarity on the whole scenario?:o

If he keeps on working, remember that he can draw his state pension and stay in paid employment.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Legislation coming in October wll mainly affect women (more about equality than freedom of choice).

Here is a link to the latest changes to the Local Government Pension

Scheme, which I assume is the scheme you refer to.

    http://www.lgps.org.uk/latest/proposed-changes-england-wales.html

It says here you can remain in the scheme until age 75.

    Extract quoted below.

Other changes that come into effect from 6 April 2006
you can join and remain in the Scheme until the day before your 75th birthday.
if you defer drawing your pension beyond age 65, your pension benefits will be actuarially increased.

I believe the employer will need to agree to continuing in employment eg. the ability to continue to do the job and the health of the individual concerned.
