Does anyone know if having been declared bankrupt can affect your chances of emigrating to another country, particularly the US?

I would think so, they're not going to want to let you in in order to risk you owing American companies money.

Personally I think it is highly unlikely that they will even know. If you were to manage to fulfil all the other criteria for residency that is.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0 -
They tracked us down for a $35 charge it would have cost more to chase us than they got back. As for the idea that they'd never know you can trace back at least 10 years.Barclaycard 3800

Not sure about the US but to move into the UK I had to show that I would be financially independent and to prove that I had to show bank statements...to sponsor my OH to move to Canada we have to show the same. The forms are quite extensive but the general info on the Candaian web site states:
You must also bring with you enough money to cover living expenses such as rent, food, clothing and transportation for a six-month period. You may be asked to show proof of your funds.
I would guess America is similar. There is a free magazine available here
