Can anyone tell me how I can find out if I need to topup my National Insurance contributions. I've lived abraod for over a year, been a Student and been unemplyed for a number of years. I've been in full time employment for the past 15years. Can anyone help? The pension\National insurance system is far too complicated for me.

It would be best to obtain a State Pension forecast first. This will show your current and projected entitlement. It will also highlight any deficiences in your National Insurance contributions which can be paid for.
State Pension forecasting - Tel 0845 3000 168 or obtain a forecast online at http://www.thepensionservice.gov.uk
Hope this helps.

To add to the above - bear in mind also that the government has just announced a major shake-up of the state pension rules. It looks like from 2012 that you will only need to pay NI for 30 years in order to get a full state pension. So you could be OK - it depends on how old you are now and whether you are going to be paying NI until you retire.0
