    I was assuming that OP's ex earns more as she said his new partner only works 16 hours and hasn't said anything about him not working at all or working less.

    More than likely yes. I added the extra just in case as you never know - a solicitor working 16 hours could earn more than a full time employee on minimum wage (with a baby, anything is possible!).
