I think you can get direct flights to LAX from London, but not sure...don't think you can get direct flights from Vegas to UK, but again, not totally sure on that...I'm not the worlds biggest fan of LA. I think it's a bit hyped up and there's much more interesting places in the USA to visit, but it's still a popular holiday destination, so maybe I'm missing something! As for Vegas, it's fun for a few days, but not more than that. I never stayed on the strip when i was there...got a good deal at the Hilton (a short ride away) and also stayed at the El Cortez for about £10 per night, which is just off fremont street (not close to the strip, though)...very charming old (well, for Vegas) hotel, though no elevator. lol.
If you let me know what you're looking to get out of your holiday (relax, history, fun stuff/entertainment), I may be able to make some more suggestions.
Oh, and I used Dial a Flight last time I went to the States...can't recommend them highly enough! Got me a really good deal on flights and were really helpful every time I called them. wish the same could be said for BA (nice unless something goes wrong).0 -

Yes you can fly direct to Vegas !!! you could fly direct into LA and return direct from Las Veags with Virgin Atlantic ( although it means using Heathrow and Gatwick) tip : the LA flight out of Heathrow is a hell of nicer then the Gatwick flight to LV . we have a sticky thread that covers pretty much everything Vegas

El Cortez is right at the bargain bucket end of Hotels in Vegas .
rooms are at low prices right now so you should be able to get somewhere nice for a great price .
personally i could easily find things to fill 3 weeks , let alone 3 days on a first trip to Vegas .
LA is place you have to visit once in your life IMO , it's not a city without it's problems of course but i would still go back given the chance . buy a rough guide to California/ LA for a good start point to what you want to do with your timeBetter in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:0 -
agree that it's easy to book flights into LA and out of Vegas...like trets said, Virgin fly direct to both - from their site, choose 'more options' and then put London->LA and Las Vegas ->London. You can also check others that don't fly direct - most of the 3rd party websites will be a good starting point - they all offer an option for multiple destinations, but check direct with the airline before you book. We flew back with a connection for the first time in ages last trip - on AA - it was a very good experience.
We got back recently from a 9 night stay in Vegas - it was our 14th trip to Vegas since 2001 and we haven't stayed less than 8 nights but 3 of those trips...so yeah, 3 nights will be quite easy to fill...some people don't get it of course, but many do. My prediction would be you'll not get through 1/2 of what you plan to do.
For a first-timer it really, really is better to stay on the strip. There are some great deals out there. And as the Vegas thread will explain in great detail, hotel bookings made direct with the hotel are a) based on double occupancy and are per room per night, not per person per night and b) normally cancellable up to 72 hours or so before your arrival. Booking through UK 3rd parties can be a good deal, but more often than not booking direct is the way to go. There are some good deals to be had - but before you book flights check hotel prices - if there's a big convention or sporting event in Vegas - it can get ugly, price-wise.
We liked LA - we've been a couple of times, but have always had a rental car - I know there are ways to get around without one, but I have to imagine a lot of your time gets eaten up by waiting for transport and sitting on transport.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -

totally agree . hire car essential in LABetter in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:0 -
You learn something new every day! I've tended to fly into Orlando or NY or MSP before now...even when I went to Vegas I couldn't seem to find a direct flight, but that was a few years ago!
El Cortez may be cheap, but if you're on a budget there's nothing wrong with it...had *very* nice complementary toiletries as well...nicer than the Hiltons. lol. Room was spacious, bug TV and close to freemont street so suited me. I do tend to like slightly out of the way places so I can explore, though
.
And yeah, for LA you will without a doubt need a rental car!0 -

If price is the main thing, then I'm sure somewhere more off the beaten path would be fine, but with the deals you can get at many strip hotels (especially when you compare the prices to what you would pay for a similar room most cities in Europe) really make it worthwhile - especially for a first-timer.
In 14 trips we've still never stayed downtown, nor do we have any inclination to - though I know people who love staying down there...and have only stayed 1 night off the strip (at Rio, so barely off the strip). Someday we may get to the point that we're a bit been there, done that with the strip - but to us, it's just the best thing to be in the middle of it all.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0
