Traffic Fines - Are Bailiff Costs Legal?

Apologies if this has been posted in the wrong place, but my DH has got himself 2 tickets for being in a bus lane. At the time, he was a courier driver.
In the first instance he went into the bus lane to turn left to avoid the traffic which was queing to go straight ahead and was only in it for about 5 seconds.
The second, he went through a width restriction, again for about 5 seconds.
He has, very helpfully, ignored the notices and yesterday we had a bailiff visit. He now has a seriously p****d off DW!!
Anyway the total now owed for the 2 fines comes to the grand total of £751.09, presumably mostly bailiff fees!!!!!
I realise that he shouldn't have been in the bus lane under any circumstances, but I was wondering if there was any way of challenging the amount he now owes as this is an horrendous amount of money for two fines.
All ideas gratefully received.

Sorry to hear of this MOTB,
It must be very frustrating and annoying for you.
Do you have the original paperwork from the fines? Could you call up the number on the paperwork and offer to pay the fines off? This might get rid of bailiffs costs?
Am sure others with direct experience will be along soon.
Dont worry and dont let the bailiffs in!0 -
Thanks dinkylou. DH phoned them and he was supposed to be paying £34 something a month, but then he got made redundant and the bank started mucking around with his account and everything seems to have gone pear shaped (we are claiming back our bank charges of £2,400).
He and I thought he had at least paid off part of it, needless to say I can't track it down yet, but I will.
Anything, they say he hasn't paid anything and now that he's reneged on the deal he has to stump up the full amount. I have had to send them 4 post dated cheques for £187.77 each - ouch!!£2 Saver Club (started 24th March '06) going towards No. 2 Son Cub trip!!

have they given you proper paperwork showing how the total is made up?
are these genuine baliffs fees...i.e. did he get a court summons and ignored it? if he did i doubt whether there is much you can do.
did you let the baliff enter your premises and did you sign anything?0 -
If they come from a council or police fine then sorry they are legal.Barclaycard 3800

Thanks everyone for your help.
I've been on the Consumer Action Group website and done a bit of searching around. Anyway, I have now sent the bailiffs a DPA letter, asking them to forward any information they hold on DH. If they cannot supply copies of letters, calls, visits, etc, then they cannot explain the costs.........£2 Saver Club (started 24th March '06) going towards No. 2 Son Cub trip!!
