Expiration dates - Tesco

Morning!

I usually order my food online with Tesco and they always have great deals and their prices and food are great!

But recently when I recieve my food, the expiry date is very short so I have to call Tesco to complain and get refunded, which I appreciate is good of them but its aggitating that I then have to go out and grab these items! Has anyone else had this problem and able to resolve it?

I am now tempted to shop else where such as Sainsburys or Asdas but I am scared that the price of my shopping will increase ( sainsburys) or the food quality wont be as good ( Asda ) ??? Opinions please?

Many thanks

Chantelle

I was thinking of ordering stuff from Tesco, can you give me a couple of examples of how short a date they were and what they were?

  • i had a delivery last week and some cheese was a week out of date!!
It was my first delivery, so not sure if i'll be using tesco delivery again.
Finally debt free, all thanks to this site and all the posters:j

Quite regularly of late I've received delivered orders of things that go 'out of date' the day of delivery. This is obviously not too much of an issue for freezable items, but for a loaf of bread it's a bit pants.

I've given up using online delivery. I go and cherry-pick my own dates in store now.

    I wouldn't bother with Sainsburys........

had a couple of good orders from them but then they sent me about 4 packets of cooked meat that expired the next day. WhenI rang to complain they said that they had changed their policy now so that they only refund if something goes out of date on the day of delivery.

Can't order from Tesco (as I have a Visa Electrom card which they don't accept), didn't think Asda customer service was very good (they never sent me vouchers for free delivery, and it takes ages to get through to them to complain if you need to) so think it's back to "normal" shopping for me too. Either that or try Ocado, which I've heard has excellent customer service, but is obviously more pricey than others I've mentioned.

I was disappointed with the shelf life of the sainsburys items. Some of them expired the very next day! Which is pretty poor for dairy and deli tems. I will only shop non perishable, discounted items from now on.
    Loving the sunny days!

Fairly impressed with Waitrose home delivery for shelf-life.. but then I suppose you pay a little extra you expect that.

  • LeeSouthEast - I love waitrose produce but compared to the bargains you get in Tesco I would end up making my food shopping quite large! On the rare occassion I do shop there I "cherry pick" rather than online.

Its a tricky decision because it seems the best route to go is to go in store but time is something I just dont have :( hence the ease of online shopping. I called Tesco yesterday with regards to the short expiry date and although they are better than sainsbury with refunds they also advised to write in the note section of each food item stating you want a long expiry date - I am thinking although thats good that is going to be time consuming aswell!

  • Oh for sure Chantelle, I couldn't (well, I could.. but I won't!) do my general shop at Waitrose. Tesco is convenient and the prices are good. If the shelf-life was better, it'd be perfect!

I used to use Tesco all the time for online shopping. At first I noticed the short dates, but then I started putting a request for longest sell by/use by dates in the 'write a note' box (which you find under the product when you look on full trolley view). I'd just write "long sell by please". I had hardly any problems with short dates after that.
    Looking forward to the future.
  • I recently bought my groceries online. Almost everything only had a few days left before the "use by" date was reached. I think in future I'll just go and buy it in person.
