What are your total debts? can you afford to pay HMRC or come to a arrangement to them?
is it possible for you to go bankrupt? ie what assets do you have?
Most people on this board have been through or are going through bankruptcy and can give advice on the process and what it means...
a few have been made bankrupt by HMRC.
we need more information from you. You probably dont have enough time but you would need to contact a free debt charity such as CCCS or CAB0

Have a look through the info in this link
 http://www.taxaid.org.uk/tax_debt.cfm
And perhaps give them a call? Supposed to be very good....Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

            Hi,
All I can say is where HMRC are concerned they NEVER bluff. You need to get professional advice on this ASAP. They threatened BR with me but I beat them to it. They may come to a payment arrangement dependant upon the amount outstanding/ time schedule offered, providing you haven't already exhausted this option.
 Good luck0

            Thanks all for the info/links.
I received a notification of bankruptcy like in the link, but no letter indicating the amount of debt (nervousmother), so I don't know. I'm up to date on all payments and have money (not much) in the bank!
It freaked me out as I do have assets and have always paid my taxes, but as InTheBrownStuff says HMRC never bluff. I phoned the tax people, but you can't get your local office at the weekend, and they had nothing on the system to help or indicate a letter/debt.
 Very confused!
 Thanks fermi - good link.0

            Hi again,
If this is a bolt out of the blue, as you say you're always up to date etc then it may just be an error on their part. In my case I had several letters, and a visit from a distraint officer to perform a walking possession before BR was seriously threatened.
Nonetheless still ring them first thing, remember to get the name of who you speak to and ask them to log your call, please keep us posted0

Hi Inthebrownstuff - if it is an error I'm not laughing. It's not want you want to wake up to on your day off!
I have the local tax office details and the name of someone to speak to tomorrow, so hopefully they can let me know what the story is.
I'll be back with the details.0
