i have a thin rug that lies in the hallway and gets grubby very easily as its lies next to the front door, and you have to wak on it to get to the kitchen and lounge. and we have two cats and they like to sleep on it.

I have a woolen rug and I take it to the launderette to the big machine and put it on the warm cycle and then bring it home to line dry. It comes up like new.Jane
