Tesco will now only take coupons if you actually buy the product.

What is the significnce of the 99?

99 is a 'universal' barcode that will scan in all (most?) stores.

The Lidi conditional spend coupons that were around a little while ago started 55 and wouldn't scan in Tesco. They had to be put through manually as a NS coupon (non scan) and my Tescos doesn't like doing that:rolleyes:

I was told today that they don't take Somerfield or Waitrose vouchers, just Morrisons and Asda, and one other that he couldn't remember.

However, I was also told by another SA that they don't take ANY conditional spend vouchers from other retailers so I took it with a pinch of salt but decided not to risk it.

Sorry are you guys saying that Tesco will accept this five pounds off voucher? What is the significnce of the 99?

99 makes it a MONEY-OFF BARCODE (nothing specifically to do with universal scanning or where its accepted)

It's a standard within the industry so that tills can be programmed to recognise MOCs (Money Off Coupons) and DEDUCT (automatically or otherwise) an amount from the bill rather than add to the total.

Whether it actually even physically scans as a barcode is NOT absolutely guaranteed, those that do scan may or may not be accepted or acted upon.

As per this one, it is 99nnnnnnn500x

the 500 is the value in pence = £5

    These 3 digits (positions 10, 11 & 12) obviously can be anything from 000 to 999

    £9.99 is the maximum

000 means the sales assistant has to enter the value of the coupon.

000 is either because the value is £10 or more, OR more frequently when the coupon is for a FREE product and the cost of that item varies across retailers (and the issuer obviously would prefer to refund to the shop, for instance, 44p for a 44p item and not 55p to somewhere selling it for 20p - by making it a fixed 55p "maximum" value .. eg. 99nnnnnnn055x)

The nnnnnnn bit identifies the coupon to a manufacturer or product or both, or the issuer etc.

The 13th digit "x" is a check-digit and a "security device" to ensure to a resonable degree that the barcode is not mis-read by the scanner. It value (0 to 9) is created by a calculation using all the other 12 numbers and this is recalculated, checked and re-verified when it's scanned to determine a "good read"
